Morganite: The Salmon-Colored Stone

Morganite: The Salmon-Colored Stone

October 1, 2016

This month, we bring you Morganite, a distinctive, blush-toned stone. Pink Morganite is one of the natural birthstones of those born in late fall, and it is said that Morganite’s red-hued crystals bring the wearer energy, courage, passion, and love. Morganite was “discovered” in California in the early twentieth century, and was made famous by George Kunz of Tiffany & Co., who purportedly named the elusive gem after his biggest customer, bank tycoon J.P. Morgan, an avid gem collector in his own right.

Technically, Morganite is a pink variety of the mineral beryl, or beryllium aluminum silicate. Green and blue beryl is found in emeralds and aquamarines, but Morganite, a famously durable gemstone, is comprised of red beryl, which is very rare, and only available in a few of the world’s regions – primarily, certain mountain ranges in California, Utah, and New Mexico. Other Morganite deposits have been located in Brazil, Madagascar, Afghanistan, and Russia.

There’s much to love about Morganite, an unconventional and distinctive stone. Morganite is known for its multiphase liquid inclusions, which add depth and complexity to each unique piece. However, like aquamarine – another beryl – Morganite typically doesn’t contain many visible inclusions. Morganite also forms beautiful “flatter prisms” – hexagonal prisms that reflect light from all angles. And Morganite’s distinctive color, which often resembles that of a pink or brown diamond, is subtle, elegant, and never flashy. Top quality Morganite is typically a strong pink in color, while lighter-colored Morganite is often cut deeper to intensify the color. Morganite is available in a range of pinks, reds, and rosy blushes, from brilliant salmon to understated peach.
